Community Organisation: The Jewish Community of Bermuda

Demography

There are only about 100 resident Jews in Bermuda. Tourists and soldiers on the US military base make up the rest of the Jewish community.

History

The first Jewish settlers arrived in the 17th century, although a formal community was not established until the 20th century.

Community Life

Until recently, the community have rented a community centre building for 15 years, equipped with a kosher dairy kitchen (though we currently do not import kosher food, we have facilitated this in the past depending on membership needs), and our own Torah and prayer books.

A rabbi visits to lead the community on the High Holidays. All other services and ceremonies are carried out by volunteers. Communal Shabbat services are once or twice a month.

In 2018, the Bermudan community was granted a cemetery.

In 2024, the purchase of a building to be used as a synagogue and community centre was finalised.
