The Mozambique Jewish community is a very small but vibrant community with active members living in the capital city of Maputo.
Life in the community
The Jewish community in Mozambique centres around the only synagogue in the country, situated in the heart of the city centre of Maputo.
The grand synagogue is a must see built in 1926 in the Portuguese Baroque Revival Style and was restored in 2013, the synagogue is surrounded by a beautiful garden. The community, too small to host a Rabbi (although often hosts visitings Rabbis and scholars) leaves prayers and services to be led by Samuel Levy, President of the Jewish community. Prayer books in English, Portugese and Hebrew can be found to meet all of the members needs and regular children and adult education is available to members.
